Be a parent and a teacher.

Read
Ahead of the learning curve!

Parents should read to their children almost every night. Reading will stimulate not only the imagination, but the usage of the child's brain in general. Reading is a way for a parent to bond with his/her child and it is often an excellent way for the child to be excited about going to bed.

Every night at 8:00 I tell my daughter Zoe that it is bed-time, and her response is always: "Will you read a book?" Of course I will read a book. I love books and I want my child to love books too. She really enjoys reading time because I make her interact with the story. I will ask her what certain things are in the pictures, and where certain things are. It has shot her vocabulary through the roof.

I understand that things get busy and life gets crazy, but we have an obligation, as parents, to raise our children the best way that we possibly can. They did not ask to be born, and a lot of the time neither did we, but it is our fault, not theirs, so we are obligated to take care of them. Reading is just one way that we can help push our kids to learn and to become excited about learning.

My daughter wants so badly to be able to read. She's two and can recite all of her ABC's. I would imagine her wanting to read has brought on the need for her to learn this, and she has. She will be reading before she starts school, because I am going to teach her every chance I get.

Like I said, we owe it to our children to be the best parents/teachers that we can be. Our children should not suffer later on in life because we couldn't find the time to teach them early. We cannot rely solely on school to teach them because children do not always learn what they should while in school. Don't get me wrong, I think public school is a great thing, it is where I received my high school education, but public school is simply not enough.

Start off small; start with one book every night. Even if it is the same book several times a week; your child will adore you for it. They look up to you, so don't let them down.
