Heath Ledger began his acting career in Home and Away where he played the role of surfer Scott Irwin in 1997. He went on to make his film debut in Blackrock later that year. He landed his first Hollywood role in 1999, starring in the teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You.
Ledger's rise to prominence was rapid and he was soon to star alongside Mel Gibson in The Patriot before playing opposite Halle Berry in the Oscar-winning Monster's Ball.
Ledger's relationship with Naomi Watts thrust him further into the limelight. Often said to be uncomfortable with the trappings of fame, Ledger split up with Watts in 2004.
However, he continued to impress the critics and audiences alike, and his role in The Brothers Grimm in 2005 was widely praised. Later in 2005, Ledger starred alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the universally-acclaimed Brokeback Mountain. The role that saw him gain new-found adulation and respect, as well as Oscar, Golden Globe and Bafta nominations.
The enormous success of the film led to Ledger being offered more high-profile roles and, in 2007, he starred in I'm Not There before starting filming the new Batman film The Dark Knight.
However, he suffered turmoil in his personal life when he split from partner Michelle Williams, the mother of their three-year-old daughter Matilda Rose.
On 23rd January 2008, and just as he was establishing himself as one of Hollywood's finest actors, he was found dead at his home in Manhattan, New York. He was just 28.
