Children's Secretary Praises The Spice Girls
December 9th 2007 20:49
The Sunday Times today reported that the children’s secretary Ed Balls sees the Spice Girls as inspirational and good role models:
But how inspirational are they really? And are they really good role models for teenagers today?
Victoria Beckham is far too thin and no teenager should aspire to achieve her look. It can only result in an unhealthy attitude towards food. However you have to admire her determination to succeed in life, as well as her drive and ambition. Since the Spice Girls split up she has tried her hand at a solo career, acting and fashion designing and has achieved some success. She has certainly achieved a massive fortune through her careful management of Brand Beckham.
Geri Halliwell has also been plagued with bulimia over the years and has clearly lost a lot of weight recently. However like Victoria she is also a working mother, and Geri has also had her own solo career. She has also worked for the United Nations as a goodwill ambassador.
Mel B (Scary), Emma Bunton (Baby) and Mel C (Sporty) did not fade into the background either. Mel B has daughter Angel (fathered by Eddie Murphy) and Emma has recently given birth to son Beau. Mel C has concentrated on her singing career and has clearly had the most solo success.
None of them have succumbed to the murky world of drugs or remained on a downhill path of destruction, and they are now back with a vengeance and the first concert of their comeback tour was extremely well received. Even their critics could find no fault. You have to admire their guts and determination.
And teenagers could do far worse. Celebrities like Britney Spears , Lindsey Lohan and Amy Winehouse are setting examples no mother would want to see their daughters following. Or their sons for that matter.
The Spice Girls have turned in Spice Women and done a pretty good job of it! Here’s hoping they will stay a round a while longer.
“They inspire girls to believe they can stand up for themselves and do well.”
