Obama Gets My Vote - Again

Kudos to our new president Barack Obama for his discussion on education with Tom Brokaw on Sunday's Meet the Press. When asked about his education policy, he said, "Yes, we're going to have an education policy. Yes, we're going to be putting more money into school construction. But ultimately, we want to talk to parents about reading to their kids."
Thank goodness someone is finally talking about parental responsibility when it comes to education. I'm so tired our government -- and in turn parents -- putting the entire burden of educating children on the schools. Some parents think they have no role in their children's education. They either put them in day care and assume they're learning something there, or they just wait until their children go to Kindergarten. That's five years of wasted brain development! Parents are so important in their child's education, and I'm just thrilled that our new president realizes this as well.
My own kids were both reading before preschool because I essentially homeschooled them since birth. I am an advocate of homeschool, although I can't afford to stay home and homeschool my own kids. But I would like to see public schools eliminated or reformed so that parents are required to play a role in educating their own children. This would encourage more parents to adjust their lifestyles and stay home with their kids instead of shipping them off to daycare. This would also promote parents getting more education themselves. It would make schools more accountable for actual learning (rather than inane test scores) because parents would actually have a clue about what's going on the classroom.
You go, Mr. Obama! Bring parents into the educational framework. Get them involved. Make them accountable. We can all agree that our public schools have become a complete disaster. I should know -- I am a public school teacher myself. It's time to really shake things up and reform the entire system. Eliminate the testing! Let's teach our kids how to think, how to imagine, how to be curious. Who better than parents to help lead the way in giving our kids the best education possible?
