How safe are children in school?
February 2nd 2008 19:48
It is extremely concerning to hear in the news this week that a 13-year-old boy has been charged after stabbing a 14 year old classmate three times in the chest and stomach. The attack took place at Allerton Grange School, in Moortown, Leeds.
The teenager will appear before Leeds Youth Court charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm following the attack according to the Press Association. The 14 year old victim ,Shaquille Clarke-Adams, remains in a stable condition in Leeds General Infirmary.
School is an environment where you expect your children to be safe and protected from violence. We have to place our trust in the teachers that they will come to no harm. It is certainly not a place where you expect children to be carrying knives, or weapons of any description.
There has to be a zero tolerance approach on children carrying knives, and importantly an clamp down on those who are selling them. Stabbings are becoming increasingly common among young people. There is a danger that one day the stabbing of a 14 year old in school will no longer be considered so shocking.
Richard Morris, chairman of governors at the school in Leeds, said after the attack "we can reassure families that Allerton Grange is a safe environment."
It is clearly not!
