The Spirit of Christmas Shopping
November 29th 2008 02:34
I was one of the brave souls who decided to venture out to the stores today for Black Friday. Every year, I tell myself I’m not up for the challenge. But every year, those sale papers show up at my doorstep, and I just can’t help myself. I am a sucker for the Christmas spirit. It’s kind of scary when you think about it. I like to think of myself a pretty savvy consumer. I’m not taken in by fads or marketing ploys. Remember all those suckers who camped outside of Best Buy for the new iPhone a couple of years back? Then Apple dropped the price a couple of weeks later. I just shook my head and snickered. I wasn’t taken in by the hype.
I don’t fall for those Doorbuster sales. I don’t buy my kids the latest gadgets. I have no interest in high fashion or designer shoes or fancy fingernails. I’m too poor to be brainwashed into wasting my money.
But play some Bing Crosby Christmas songs and hang a few strands of garland, and I whip out my credit card like a compulsive shopper. I just can’t help myself. Christmas is just so much fun when you have kids! To me, it’s way more fun than it was when I was a kid myself. Shopping for my kids gives me a thrill like no other. I am happy to stand in line with the rest of the bozos if it means I get to see their smiling faces as they tear into their gifts on Christmas morning.
So I braved the crowds and headed to Target. And you know what? It wasn’t half bad. Sure, the aisles were crowded, and a few people got cranky. But I just laughed at them. If you go out on Black Friday and are surprised that the stores are crowded, you deserve to have a bad experience.
I was actually pleasantly surprised. There was absolutely no line at Target. The parking lot at Barnes & Noble was almost empty. And the deals I got were phenomenal! I thought security was going to stop me at the door at Kohl’s because I walked out of there with such steals. Not only did I get the Early Bird Special prices at 3:00 in the afternoon, but I also had a coupon for 15% off my entire purchase. On top of that, I got $20 in Kohl’s Cash for my next visit! I couldn’t believe it.
I got a great start on my Christmas shopping, and a good dose of holiday spirit today. Like everything else, it’s all in your attitude. You can go out and get frustrated with the crowds and the lines. Or you can smile and enjoy the excitement of another Christmas season. I choose the latter. It’s much more fun that way.
